SSM 01: DOCTRINE OF TRUE LOVE

Chloe Yap Mun Ee / Malaysia / 2016 / English/Cantonese / 30min Joanne is looking for the grey in a world of black and white, unforgivingly and ironically living a life of excess, in opposition to her initial doctrines. Using the medium of film, performance, and an immersive environment, "Doctrine of True Love" explores how we perceive love and the idea of the ideal person. The doctrine of true love consists of four stages of perception: 1)comfort and familiarity, 2)seeking, 3)ideal, and 4)intellectual, emotional, and physical enlightenment. This version consists of both a short fiction film and the representation of an immersion into the film. After a private screening in Malaysia, audience members were invited to another space, but not told what they would find inside. Upon entering, they met Joanne in her apartment. Director: An aspiring filmmaker and video artist, she explores emerging ways of audio-visual storytelling that engage the senses and provoke thought. She has used different methods and explored different processes in her filmmaking, and constantly searches for ways to experiment with what’s possible for the ‘cinematic’ medium. But she mostly uses the film and video medium to confront her personal struggles and questions, currently exploring themes along the lines of sexuality, gender, intimacy and love. Producer: Low Zheng Yii
